Sorry for the late post, technical difficulties while trying to upload my photos from the weekend!
This past weekend I went to be certified in a group exercise format called PiYo. What is PiYo, you ask? This workout strengthens, conditions, and improves flexibility of the body with principles and movements inspired by yoga and pilates. PiYo provides an effective, low impact, but fun and upbeat workout. The workouts are paired with music that drives the exercises and provides a fun atmosphere. My dance background definitely helped in recognizing the music and how the movement flowed with it.
So, I decided that I was going to do this training a few months ago. My old boss, Misty, who had owned the dance studio I worked at was going and told me about the opportunity. I needed credits in order to keep my group exercise certification updated and thought that PiYo might be something that would appeal to me (I was right). We decided that we would ride together and grab a hotel room the night before to avoid the 2 hour drive to the facility the morning of the training. I wasn’t about to wake up at 5 to leave by 6 a.m.!
Come to find out the night we would be staying at the hotel was the night of UFC 190, and the main event being Ronda Rousey vs. Bethe Correia. First of all, I had never seen Ronda fight and it needed to happen. Plus, there was so much hype around this fight, I couldn’t miss it. So, I talked Misty into finding a Buffalo Wild Wings in the area to watch the main card.
I expected the fights to last until about midnight at the latest so figured I could still get about 5.5 to 6 hours of good sleep before the 8 hour day of training. No such luck. We didn’t get back to our hotel room until about 2:30 a.m. That meant about 3.5 hours of sleep and me thinking I would definitely be feeling like this all day…
And we definitely needed coffee, for me it was a grande soy teddy bear with an extra shot of espresso. It was definitely needed, thanks Biggby!
Misty and I got to the venue pretty early, plenty of time to find a good spot and set up our mats.
How cute, we match! #pinkpower
We started off by introducing ourselves and going through some of the basics about PiYo. For those of you that know me, the fact that I hole-punched all of the manuals and gave them their own binder, along with brining multiple writing utensils and highlighters shouldn’t be surprising. I was so prepared, haha!
After the basic information session we went through some of the moves we would be doing and had our master class. This was my first PiYo class ever. I had never done the at-home DVD workouts or the live class, but I really enjoyed it. Shout out to my master trainer Larisa Settembro for giving me an awesome experience. I was a sweaty mess, and my hair was proof!
We took a break for lunch and found a Jimmy Johns in the plaza we were in. I got my regular, #12, the beach club, but decided to get the whole wheat bread instead of the “unwich” lettuce wrap. After the amount of work I had done and what I knew I had coming the rest of the day, I needed to get some carbs in!
We definitely worked up an appetite.
Throughout the rest of the day we went over the different components of the format, patterns, and how all the pieces come together. I even got a chance to get on the mic and teach part of the warm-up!
Once the day finally ended at 5 p.m., Misty and I were both so tired…but we still had a 2 hour drive home.
{We got this!}
Overall it was such a great experience and a super fun weekend. We’re officially certified and can’t wait to start teaching classes.
