My Pre-Holiday Detox

November 9, 2015 Posted by Hannah Boyl Fitness, health, Pursuit of Healthiness

The holidays are full of fun socializing with family and friends. And we all know, the socialization comes with parties, that have food and drinks we may not normally consume, and with that, sometimes we can see added weight gain.
The holiday season only comes around once a year, so I hate to deprive myself of the yummy meals and treats that come along with that, and I wouldn’t expect you to do that either. (Of course moderation is key here.) But here is something I am doing…

I’m giving up alcohol for four weeks. Starting today and going through the first week of December. I’m considering this my own personal social experiment, on me. I want to see how I feel without that toxin (as enjoyable as alcohol can be, it is toxic) in my system.

Granted, I don’t drink a whole lot, but according to the research, I do drink enough to affect my metabolism. The science shows that fat metabolism is put on hold when alcohol is present in the system because clearing that toxicity out takes precedent over other liver function.

Check out this fun illustration of the facts:

First of all, I’m wondering if this will just help me feel better overall. I want to pay attention to my level of fatigue, sleep habits, energy, mood, anything really! I don’t know if any of those things will be affected, but that’s why this is an experiment right?!

I’m also thinking ahead. I know in the next few months I’ll be consuming foods I don’t normally eat and possibly more sugars than normal. If I’m giving my metabolism a boost, allowing those other foods and sugars to be metabolized with no other substances to get in the way, I may not see the direct effects of the holiday season on my body as one may normally see.

I have no idea how this is going to change how I feel (or if it will do anything at all!) but I’ll be sure to keep you up to date and give you the “results” of my little experiment.

The Burning Question: Where to Get Good Information

Mar 14, 2019

I did a nutrition seminar at the beginning of the month and one of the questions I got really made me stop and think. I was talking about the plethora of misinformation available in the media when it comes to nutrition and was asked, “Where would you suggest we go to look for good information?” I really had to take a second and think about it. Was there one place on the internet that I really trusted to get it all right? Was there one place I could feel comfortable sending these people to get additional information? Unfortunately, I really couldn’t think of anything.

So how did I answer…
